Happy Spring!

We had a productive spring weekend. The gorgeous sunny skies inspired us to build, embroider, quilt and bake all weekend long.

Here are my two little birdies on a t-shirt. This was my first real foray into embroidery, and now I can't get enough of it.Jon baked some bread for our Happy Spring dinner with the family. This is all that is left. We really like bread around here.

We went on our first bike ride of the season. We did 10 miles on the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Path just outside of Schenectady and dined at the Kiwanis Park on a feast of peanut butter and jelly. It was lovely.
Since the weather has decided to come around, Jon has been biking to work. This led him to search far and wide on the Internet to devise a bike rack, so we wouldn't mark up the walls in the den. Yes, we keep our bikes in our apartment, don't judge. This is what he came up with. Quite tricky, if I do say so myself. It simply lifts up the back tire.

I decided to start a patchwork quilt a couple weeks ago. Last week I finished sewing the squares together. It's certainly not perfect, as this is my first solo attempt at quilting. I began assembling my quilt sandwich so I could begin hand tying it. This is the hardest part - you have to pull the quilt top, batting and back taut and then pin it. Once it's all pinned, you begin tying it. I decided to do nearly every square, and with nearly 200 squares, yours truly will be hand tying this thing for quite a while. Here's what I have so far.

When it's all said and done the quilt will cover just the top of our queen size bed, but would be just about perfect for a double or a twin bed. This has been really fun, especially because I'm using my grandmother's beautiful old Singer. Grandpa Rohr gave me her old machine, complete with its own cabinet and knee treadle a couple years ago, and now, whenever I sew, I feel as though I'm channeling my gram and her crazy sewing skills. It's pretty cool.
